The end of transfer fee's in Belgium? The 'Arbeidshof of Hasselt' (labour court) has ruled in an appeal case that the football player Mohammed Dahmane only has to pay an amount equal to 1 year salary compensation to former club Racing Gent. The Arbeidshof set aside the so called 'Royal Decree of 1978' according to which a player had to pay the remaining value of his contract in compensation after a unjust unilateral termination. The ruling is a big win for football players in Belgium but will make it kind of impossible for Belgium clubs to collect transfer fee's. Professor of labour law Roger Blainpin welcomes that football players and clubs are finally treated like other employees and employers.
